Power Rankings
If Tony Gaffney plays the way he has been playing, Yellow is impossible to game plan against and will only lose if they play themselves out of it. They can run and gun if they need to, or slow down and wear you down if they want to too. Taylor will score in bunches and Mike will get that quiet 30 points that kills you. They have size, athleticism and it now it's starting look like a lot of chemistry.
Dfern has put together a basketball team: an actual team that plays together and isn't just looking to jack up shots. They have the athleticism and team basketball IQ to do things a lot of other teams can't and it will likely be the difference maker as the season progresses. Jowaun and EJ are both buckets and apparently can just turn it on and off. You've been warned.
They got things done last week, so their drop in rankings are more about other teams winning more impressively than them being worse. Sayvon Houston has more than a few captains desperately trying to find a 6'5 bodies that can give them a chance and Chris Torres continues to get things done effortlessly.
All they needed was Captain Steve to come back and suddenly a win has glosses over a bunch of the chemistry issues. The truth is, with a core of Jarrett, Angel and Charlie they'll give any team a run for their money. If they can figure out how to play together, they might even make a run for the title. They have the pieces.
Red showed the league how you beat White: Pressure the ball, overplay the shooters on the wings to make them uncomfortable and then iso them on offense where they can't compete defensively. Sure, they've been missing their best player and their big man but it's hard to ignore all the glaring holes that have been exposed the past two weeks.
I think we knew it wouldn't last but we hoped we were wrong. Orange was outclassed last week and perhaps we're looking a little differently at that week 1 victory. Stan looked completely human and the same chemistry issues from last years squad remain an acute infection on the roster. It just doesn't feel like there is a dog on this team that'll drag them to win consistently.
Moral victories shouldn't be celebrated, but Purple showed signs of life last week against a clearly superior team and hey, lets celebrate that. They actually have some talent that'll give teams trouble: Garret has shown he can consistently score and Mike Curtin remains automatic from deep. With Scotty and Ant eventually coming back, maybe they can leverage that into a string of wins.
Oof. There will be no easy games for Black this season. They've got a seemingly good enough core with AP, Isaiah, Quis and Mitch but it's just not translating. They're not more athletic or more skilled than any other team, so in order to win they'd need to play really good team basketball together... and unless they add a coach and turn pick-up on Wendesday's to practices I doubt it happens.
